ABB Synchronous reluctance motors (SynRM)
Synchronous reluctance technology combines the performance of permanent magnet motors with the simplicity and service-friendliness of induction motors because they do not include rare earth materials in permanent magnets. The rotor in a synchronous reluctance motor has no magnets or windings and suffers virtually no power losses. And because there are no magnetic forces in the rotor, maintenance is as straightforward as with induction motors.
Key benefits
• Reduce your environmental impact by using less electricity and reducing CO2 emissions.
• Improve your sustainability by meeting current and future efficiency standards and by increasing efficiency and productivity.
• Increase your reliability and ensure the most sustainable and long-lasting performance by minimizing motor failures and downtime.
• Improve the quality of your production by accurate torque and speed control
• Upgrade your retrofits by replacing standard induction motors in any industrial application

ABB Permanent magnet motors
The permanent magnet motor range extends the effective nominal speed range of the rugged industry workhorses down to 100 – 850 r/min. The motors can simplify drive systems by effectively eliminating the need of speed reduction devices.

The most common present drive systems, which permanent magnet motor solution could replace:
• Traditional AC motor, frequency converter and gear box combination
• Traditional slow speed AC motor, typically 10-16-pole or slower with frequency converter
• Variable speed DC drive system with gear box

Low inertia motors for high torque applications
Another important technology advantage is the motors’ low rotor inertia, an attractive feature in high power density applications such as extruders, cranes and test benches. Low rotor inertia enables faster reversing of the motor’s rotational direction, thus speeding up the machine’s back-and-forth motion – a critical factor for a smooth and safe maneuvering.
The extra ABB advantages
The benefits of partnering with ABB extends beyond motor technology supremacy alone. Our HDP motors are developed alongside and tested together with ABB’s renowned variable speed drives (VSD). Optimized as complete system solutions, ABB’s motor-and-drive packages offer highest machine performance and just the set of qualities requested by users – advanced speed control for precise machine operation or maneuvering, along with high energy efficiency.
ABB High Dynamic Performance motors
There’s a world of untamed power out there. Nature’s own forces, inspiring us to capture the motion and bring new energy to the industries of the world. ABB’s High Dynamic Performance (HDP) motors turn fierce force into relentless rotation, boosting the performance of cranes, extruders, test benches and many more machine types.
Full range, great OEM opportunities
ABB is addressing machinery OEMs with a comprehensive range of HDP motors designed specifically for industrial machine use – including megawatt-class models and high-speed and water-cooled alternatives. The new motors create new opportunities for machine builders to improve their replacement motor offering, while developing new and innovative machine designs.
The dual benefit of high-power density
ABB’s HDP motors build on a classic ABB technology advantage – market-leading power density. In short, any motor of a given size will deliver a higher power output than a corresponding standard machine motor. OEMs are thus offered a ‘dual benefit’: Boosting machine performance using more powerful replacement motors and designing more compact new machine types with otherwise comparable performance.

ABB Roller table motors
ABB Roller table motor series offers the optimal solution for your rolling mills.
ABB roller table motors are robust and customizable motors that are built to meet the high requirements for reliability in the tough conditions in rolling mills.
Roller tables incorporate a number of motors, the speed of which can be steplessly controlled by one or more frequency converters. The roller table motors supplied by ABB are squirrel cage motors which are specially designed for use with frequency converters. Robust in construction, the motors are fully sealed to withstand the tough conditions in rolling mills.
The motors are low speed units intended for direct connection to rollers. The pole number and frequency can be selected, avoiding the need for gearboxes and therefore saving on maintenance costs and increasing the overall efficiency of the drive.

ABB Smoke extraction motors
Smoke extraction motors play a critical role in keeping tunnels safe. In the event of a tunnel fire, lives depend on the ability of extraction fans – and the electric motors driving them – to disperse toxic fumes and smoke quickly and efficiently. Smoke extraction motors must be capable of withstanding the high temperatures generated in fire zones and continue to work reliably under these extreme circumstances.
In normal daily operation they are part of the comfort ventilation system which maintains tunnel air quality. Ideally the motors are controlled by variable speed drives (VSDs) to allow adjustable fan settings saving energy.
Smoke extraction motors are typically used in two types of applications – jet fans and axial fans – for both comfort ventilation and extreme cases by fire.
• Tunnels
• Single and multi-storey shopping malls
• Single and multi-storey industrial buildings and warehouses
• Stairways
• Enclosed car parks
• Theaters
• Other locations to mitigate the effects of a fire
