Dry Ice Blasting

Dry Ice Blasting - Introduction

Dry ice blasting is an industrial cleaning process that can be likened to other forms of media blasting like sand or bead blasting but with a difference - Dry ice Blasting uses solid Carbon Dioxide or Dry Ice as the blasting medium bringing along with it host of advantages.

  • Enhances the cleaning - provides a "Cleaner Clean".
  • Reduces Down time - allows most items to be cleaned "Inposition".
  • Can be used in tasks as gentle as dusting smoke damage from books or as aggressive as for removing weld slag from tooling.
  • Dry Ice cleaning is a non-abrasive, nonflammable and nonconductive cleaning method and can be used on active electrical or mechanical parts.
  • Is environmentally-friendly and contains no secondary contaminants such as solvents or grit media All of which makes it a preferred cleaning method for industry specific applications and is thus used in the Power, Food and Beverage, Rubber mold, Printing, Tire, Aeronautical, Pharmaceutical and other industries.
How Dry Ice Blasting Works?

Dry Ice Blast cleaning is a process in which particles of solid carbon dioxide, commonly known as dry ice, are propelled at high velocity to impact and clean a surface. Upon impact, the CO2 particles return to their natural state as carbon dioxide gas, thus disappearing as they clean. Although it is often compared to sand blasting, bead blasting, or soda blasting, dry ice actually cleans differently. Traditional abrasive blasting methods clean through a chiseling action, much like using an ice pick, but often take away part of the substrate as well. Dry ice, on the other hand, might better be compared to a spatula as it lifts away the contaminant. The particles can present its varied granulation depending on the surface to be applied.

Illustration Of The Cleaning

The dry ice penetrates in the pollutant but instantly it exalts. This sublimation creates a wave of compression tension between the surface and the layer to be it cleans, with enough energy to remove the pollutant and to leave the surface evaporates. When the surface to be cleans it contains oil or grease, the action of cleaning it is a process of similar wash the water of high pressure. When the particles enter in contact with the surface, they are compressed, creating a snow flow with high-speed that washes the surface without leaving any residue.
